I don’t know about you but I’m a huge fan of bi-folding doors and it would seem that I’m not alone as this type of door is becoming more and more popular in the UK.

A survey revealed that sales in 2019 were more than four times that seen during the same period ten years ago.

I prefer the doors with thin frames that maximise the amount of light that penetrates into the room. There are however many different styles to suit all budgets and preferences.

Are you considering installing bifold doors on your property? The good news is that pre-pandemic, these doors had come down in price due to increased demand and competition, so even with recent inflation, many are still cheaper than they were a decade ago.

Bifold doors typically come in widths from 1.8m to 4.8m wide and the frames can be made from a variety of materials such as PVCu plastic, aluminium and timber. You can even mix and match and have weatherproof aluminium on the outside and traditional oak on the inside.

Below is our price guide for both PVCu and aluminium bifold doors.

We have chosen the two popular sizes and both doors were white on the outside and white on the inside, VAT is included:

Where Did These Prices Come From?

In 2022, we sourced quotes from 12 different installers of bifold doors from several locations around the UK.

The table above contains an average of the prices we received.

We also checked prices online from several manufacturers of bifold doors; you can get your own custom quote for your bifold door here if you wish. The prices online include the fixing kit and delivery as well as VAT but exclude the installation cost.

Labour Prices

From our research, we believe that the installation fees for a small door (2.7m) are around £600 inc vat.

For a larger door of around 4.7m, expect the installation fee to increase to around £900-1000 inc vat.

The installation fee includes an initial survey and measure-up of the door, any trims, beads, hinges and handles etc as well as the removal and disposal of the old door.

You can expect a discount if you have the doors installed as part of a larger installation involving other doors and windows.

The prices we have suggested are standalone prices and are averages.

Does Your Location Affect the Cost?

Yes. The cost to manufacture and deliver bifold doors is the same regardless of where you live.

However, there is some difference in the labour cost you can expect to pay, with London being the most expensive and the north being somewhat cheaper,

What Else Affects the Price?

The installation price we have suggested assumes that there is already a large door/bi-folding door in place.

If you are looking to expand an existing doorway then that will cost extra and some of the work may probably need to be done by a separate general builder.

The price to remove a wall isn’t cheap as the work usually involves the installation of an RSJ support and the making good of the internal plastering, flooring and painting.

The quality of the doors also affects the price, we chose mid-range products for the examples shown on this page but the sky is the limit when it comes to bifold door prices. There are also plenty of cheaper products on the market which is competitive.

How Long Does it Take to Install a Bifold Door?

For a small door of around 2.7m expect the work to take less than half a day.

For a larger door of around 4.7m expect the work to take between half and three-quarters of a day.

Obviously, add extra days for brickwork, plastering and painting etc should you wish to increase the size of the opening.

Will New Bifold Doors Increase My Home’s Value?

If you’re replacing a sliding door or bifold door like-for-like then it’s unlikely to increase the value of the property. However, if you increase the size of the opening and install an extra-wide door then yes, it may increase the value of the home as potential buyers prefer wide opening doors.
