I don’t know about you but I’m a huge fan of bi-folding doors.
It would seem that I’m not alone as this type of door is becoming more and more popular.
A recent survey revealed that sales in the last year are more than four times that seen during the same period ten years ago.
I prefer the variants with thin frames that maximise the amount of light that penetrates into the room. There are however many different styles to suit all budgets and preferences.
Are you considering installing bifold doors to your property? The good news is in recent years, these doors have really come down in price and what was once seen as a luxury home improvement is now affordable to many.
Bifold doors come in sizes from 1.8m to 4.8m and the frames can be made from a variety of materials such as PVCu plastic, aluminium and timber. You can even mix-and-match and have weatherproof aluminium on the outside and traditional oak on the inside.

Where Did These Prices Come From?
We sourced quotes from 6 different suppliers and installers of bifold doors.
The table above contains an average of the prices we received.
Below is a chart showing the individual prices for the supply and install of a 2.7m PVCu bifold door:
and below you can find details of the 6 quotes we gathered for a 4.7m aluminium door, again on a supply and install basis
From our research, we believe that the installation fees for a small door (2.7m) are around £600 inc vat.
For a larger door of around 4.7m, expect the installation fee to be increased to around £900-1000 inc vat.
The installation fee includes an initial survey and measure-up of the door, any trims, beads, hinges and handles etc as well as the removal and disposal of the old door.
You can expect a discount if you have the doors installed as part of a larger installation involving other doors and windows.
The prices we have suggested are standalone guide prices.
Does Your Location Affect the Cost?
Yes.The cost to manufacture and deliver bifold doors is the same regardless of where you live.
The cost to manufacture and deliver bifold doors is the same regardless of where you live.
However, there is some difference in the labour cost you can expect to pay, with London being the most expensive and the north being somewhat cheaper,
The prices in our table are an average of the quotes we gathered, which were from various suppliers around the UK.
What Else Affects the Price?
The installation price we have suggested assumes that there is already a large door/bifolding door in place. If you are looking to expand an existing doorway then that will cost extra and the work will probably need to be done by a separate general builder.
The quality of the doors obviously affects the price, we chose mid-range products for the examples shown on this page.
How Long Does it Take to Install a Bifold Door?
For a small door around 2.7m expect the work to take less than half a day.
For a larger door of around 4.7m expect the work to take between half and three-quarters of a day.
Obviously, add extra days for brickwork should you wish to increase the size of the opening.
Will New Bifold Doors Increase My Home’s Value?
For most properties; no. However, increasing the size of the opening and having extra wide opening doors onto a swimming pool or feature garden could make the property much more appealing to buyers.

You could make a saving on the cost of the labour by having the bifold door fitted by a smaller firm that is trading below the vat registration threshold, although vat would still need to be paid to the supplier/manufacturer.
