We truly are a nation of dog lovers here in the UK, many pet owners treat their pets as if they were one of the family. It should be no surprise that many dog owners choose to have their pets professionally groomed.

If you want to know how much dog grooming costs, this page is for you.

We can also point you in the right direction so you can get a competitive quote from a trusted business.

During early summer 2018 and again in 2022, we got in touch with 25 dog groomers in and around the south of the UK and asked them for a price to groom two dogs.

The first was a medium-sized dog, a Springer Spaniel. The second was a larger dog, a Giant Schnauzer.

What Exactly is Dog Grooming?

Dog grooming is much more than a haircut or a wash and there are different levels of grooming.

The process, however, generally involves some or all of the following:

  • Hair brushing and stripping (stripping is often charged as an extra)
  • Washing. shampooing and conditioning
  • Hair cutting
  • Styling
  • Nail cutting (often as an optional extra)
  • Ears cleaned and plucked
  • Mouth freshener

While some basic day-to-day grooming can be done by the owner, hair cutting, styling and nail work is best left to a professional.

There are many benefits to dog grooming:

  • Improves the look of your dog
  • Improves the smell of your dog
  • Lowers the chances of your dog suffering from skin, mouth and eye conditions
  • Frequent hair cutting keeps your dog cool in the summer
  • Makes it easier to spot rashes, parasites, cuts and scratches

How Much Do You Think a Full Groom to a Medium-Sized Dog Will Cost?

Throughout our site, we like to ask our visitors how much they think certain tasks and projects will cost.

The question below is entirely optional, you can skip it if you wish:

Our Research in 2021

In 2018 and again in 2021 we asked 25 dog groomers for a price to fully groom two dogs.

How Often Should Your Dog Need a Grooming Service?

The frequency of the required grooming service will depend on the breed and hair type of the dog.

In general, short, smooth and wire-haired dogs require a groom every 8 – 14 weeks.

Long haired, silk and wool hair types require more frequent grooming, every 4 – 10 weeks is the norm.

The Best Place to Find a Reliable Dog Groomer

Recommendations from friends, relatives and neighbours are the best way to find a dog groomer.

You can also see if there are any Facebook groups in your area for neighbours or dog owners. These are great places to ask questions about local businesses.

You could try an online service such as Bark but in reality, reviews from people you know are far more reliable.
